Rupert Murdoch Grant On Google And Anti Sopa Tech Community
Google has of recent come under sharp criticism from News Corp. Rupert Murdock. The media Guru alleges that Google has a hidden hand support of piracy with Capital Hill debating on whether to enact the Stop Online Piracy Act into law. Bemused Murdoch’s misgivings can be traced back to a function hosted by Google where he was an attendee; a Consumer Electronics Show that was organized by Google in Las Vegas. The function was to demonstrate Google TV, where one could watch TV programs over the internet.
During the presentation, those in attendance including the media mogul were informed that one could find the appropriate content by searching through Google search function. Since the function has catalogs such as Netflix and other video streaming applications such as Amazon and YouTube, one could easily search and play movies and favorite shows. The media don then posed a question to the presenter inquiring if the search engine could filter off pirated sites. When the answer was negative, Rupert took an issue with the answer.
This is not the first time of his waning support to Google and its products; he once described the giant search engine as parasite that has swashbuckling ways of doing business. News Corp spoke so far has not issued a statement on the issue as his counterpart at Google declined to issue a statement. Google has since dismissed the accusations as baseless. In the recent days, Mr. Murdoch has appeared campaigning alongside some members of the congress who appear to introduce some bills to contain online piracy in the recent calls to stop the vice that has its slogan Stop Online Piracy Act that is in the House of Representatives. This has raised sharp reaction from major websites with Wikipedia blackening out its website for twenty-four hours to show its displeasure at the move. Even though the cause is good, the major sites show that they are censorship sites, which may effect regulate the content posted on the sites.
Since Google and other search engines allow pirated content to run on them, Murdoch feels they are the greatest promoters on piracy and profit from pirate activities. This is what he has been tweeting about. Murdoch has spared not even President Obama for his opposition to the SOPA campaign. This has not been taken down by the tech society and this as led them to give the Media magnet some lessons about the internet. It will be interesting to see how this will end, with Rupert tweeting, and the tech community not taking it lying down. For now it seems the tussle between Murdoch and the internet is a hot bed each is not trying to cool.
